Report from the commemorative event, "Meeting Erika," in memory of the deceased contemporary witness Erika Estis

On September 26, 2023, the Jewish Girls’ School Memorial and Educational Site in cooperation with the Research Centre for Contemporary History in Hamburg and the Foundation of Hamburg Memorials and Learning Centres invited guests to the Jewish Cultural House on Flora-Neumann-Strasse. Titled, "Meeting Erika," the event was held to commemorate the 100-year-old contemporary witness Erika Estis née Freundlich, who passed away on January 14, 2023. read more

Barbara Maass’ Visit to the denk.mal Hannoverscher Bahnhof Memorial Site

In mid-September, the denk.mal Hannoverscher Bahnhof team welcomed Barbara Maass from Montréal to the memorial site in HafenCity. She is the granddaughter of Adolf and Käthe Maass, who were both deported from Hamburg to Theresienstadt in July 1942 and murdered in Auschwitz in 1944. read more

From 1 September to 31 October 2023, the photo installation ‘Not Just a Memorial’ will feature survivors and descendants at the ‘denk.mal Hannoverscher Bahnhof’ memorial site. read more

We mourn the passing of Erika Estis, née Freundlich

In November 2022 Erika Estis was able to celebrate her 100th birthday in New York surrounded by her family. We have since received the sad news that Erika Estis passed away in the night from 13 to 14 January 2023. read more
